After a crisis, the character chooses the four traits that best describe the person they've become, and erases all the others. Something major in the narrative will test the very foundation of their character, and they will need to make hard choices to maintain their self image. Once a character has ten traits, they encounter a crisis. If they fail, they must write a new trait to encapsulate how they changed or grew from this new experience. If they succeed, the character stands firm against the influences and has authority to change the narrative to reflect that. Whenever the character encounters something that goes against that trait, they roll the d20 and attempt to roll below the numerical value of that trait. These are core truths about the character, and more of these truths are discovered during play. These Little Gods, such as Oakenheart the spirit of tradition and strong foundations, or Tidesong the spirit of cycles and constant flow, each represent a core essence of the city that the players can tap into during the game.Įach player will choose a set of Traits and assign a numerical value to each. Jin skillfully, if at times schematically, uses their varied voices and perspectives to elucidate what drove Su Lan and resolve the mystery of Liya’s father. The third is Liya, 2 years old when Su Lan embarked with her for America to complete a PhD (and leave an unhappy history behind) she abandons college in the wake of her mother’s death to return to China in search of her unknown father. The second is Yongzong, who along with a classmate named Zhang Bo competed for Su Lan’s affections when they were university students. The first narrator is Zhu Wen, an elderly neighbor who cared for Su Lan’s infant daughter, Liya, after Su Lan returned to Shanghai without her husband, apparently lost in the Tiananmen Square crackdown.
